Identification Tools Required: Magnification and immersion cell
How to Identify:
Primary Test: The main difference between the irradiation and dyefusion is easily seen in the attached images. The dyefusion process leaves the color following the crystal structure of the topaz while the irradiation creates the color around the keel line of the stone. This is easily identified using the immersion cell.
Secondary Tests: Due to the incomplete color zoning of the dyefusion process no other tests are needed for the vast majority of stones.
Repair and Setting: No special care other than normal handling for topaz. The dyefusion process is new enough that long term durability is not fully known.
